Cantonese Travelogue - Tang Dynasty Architecture (ENGLISH)
Cantonese Travelogue - Tang Dynasty Architecture (ENGLISH)
In this episode of Tang Dynasty Architecture, we finally set off for the main event! After leaving the ancient city of Pingyao, we head to Wutai Mountain, home to two great ancient Tang Dynasty buildings: "Foguang Temple" and "Nanchan Temple." Tang Dynasty architecture is noted for its rigorous structure and grand dougong (bracket set). Although the two ancient temples differ in scale, each showcases its own beauty in structure. The historical significance of Foguang Temple is particularly noteworthy. Many years ago, before Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin discovered Foguang Temple, people believed that to study Tang Dynasty architecture, one could only visit Japan to see Tang relics. However, after Liang and Lin found Foguang Temple, this notion was proven wrong. This demonstrates that Foguang Temple holds a crucial place in the history of architecture in our country. Moreover, Lin Huiyin, the most talented woman of the Republic of China, along with her husband Liang Sicheng, dedicated their greatest efforts to documenting and studying the architectural history of China. Their poignant love story is not just about romance; it also has far-reaching implications. Shanxi is rich in ancient architecture, and these unique landscapes attract not only ordinary travelers but also the recently popular AAA game "Black Myth: Wukong," which was filmed in Shanxi. Locations such as Foguang Temple, Nanchan Temple, Yungang Grottoes, and Shanhu Temple have all become real-life filming sites for "Black Myth: Wukong." The remarkable talent and cultural heritage of Shanxi serve as a wellspring of modern inspiration. After Wutai Mountain, we will continue to Datong, starting with a visit to the great Buddhist site, the Yungang Grottoes. The Yungang Grottoes were initiated during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty in 460 AD and were basically completed by 524 AD. The grottoes are carved into the mountains, extending 1 kilometer along the eastern and western banks of the Wuzhou River, with 51 main caves housing over 51,000 large and small Buddha statues. The largest statue reaches 17 meters in height, while the smallest is only 2 centimeters tall. The cultural and religious characteristics displayed within are a veritable museum of the Northern Wei period. In recent years, visitors to the Yungang Grottoes, especially players of "Black Myth: Wukong," can imagine themselves as the chosen one, wielding the Golden Staff, and breaking out of your Five Finger Mountain.

Hong Kong is home to a one-of-a-kind urban geopark that showcases volcanic activity from around 140 million years ago, within the bustling metropolis. This unique landscape was recognised in 2023 by the International Union of Geological Sciences as one of the world’s First 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites, standing alongside renowned landmarks like the Grand Canyon in the United States and Pamukkale in Türkiye. At the High Island Reservoir in Sai Kung East Country Park, visitors can spot unique brownish-yellow hexagonal rock columns, which extend across areas like High Island, Kau Sai Chau, Tiu Chung Chau, the Ung Kong Islands, and the Ninepin Group, covering 100 square kilometres of land and sea. Recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015, the area also features 400-million-year-old sedimentary rock layers in northeastern Hong Kong, such as Bride’s Pool, Wu Kau Tang, and Luk Keng. This rich geological heritage, combined with diverse ecosystems like mangroves, feng shui woods, and coral reefs, as well as cultural landmarks like Hakka walled villages, fishing villages, and temples, forms a rare and exceptional natural and cultural landscape unique to Hong Kong. However, according to last year’s Audit Commission report, some geoparks suffer from inadequate facilities, with issues such as visitors damaging rock formations and capturing marine species. The report also highlighted a lack of proper public transport infrastructure, which has resulted in fewer visitors than expected, making it difficult to fully promote green tourism.

On Monday’s programme, we looked back at Manchester United’s recent Hong Kong tour.  The Red Devils returned to the SAR after a 12-year absence, playing a friendly match against Hong Kong, China at Hong Kong Stadium on Friday. They secured a convincing 3-1 victory, sparking hope among fans that this could mark the start of a resurgence — following a challenging few months for the English team. Despite some key players like Andre Onana, defender Harry Maguire, and right back Diogo Dalot missing out on the action, fans were still excited to see other star players on the pitch. This event also provided local footballers a chance to play against a world-class team, ahead of the Asian Cup Qualifiers against India at Kai Tak Stadium on June 10. After the news, we looked at the latest developments surrounding US tariffs. A US trade court last week blocked President Donald Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs from going into effect, but a federal appeal court subsequently paused the lower-court ruling and allowed them to stay for now.  9:05am-9:30am: Manchester United's Hong Kong tour  9:05am-9:30am: Nigel Lee, Secretary of the Official Manchester United Supporters’ Club Hong Kong 9:05am-9:30am: Derek Currie, former Hong Kong football legend and author of “When Jesus came to Hong Kong”  9:33am-10:00am:  Tariffs and business confidence  9:33am-10:00am: George Cautherley, former Vice-Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong 9:33am-10:00am: Chandran Nair, Founder of the Global Institute for Tomorrow
